Guide: How to Install MySQL

Introduction MySQL is a very popular database server and most scripts which rely on a database give MySQL the respect that it deserves... You can find out more about MySQL by going to the following address http://www.mysql.com Requirements 1. Abyss Web Server 2. MySQL 3. WinZIP Installation Steps 1. Create a new directory in the Abyss program root directory (not htdocs) called database. 2. Create a new folder inside database called mysql. You're setup should probably now look like the following: X:/Program Files/Abyss Web Server/database/mysql Please Note: Replace X:/ with your actual system path, C:/ or D:/, etc... Also, make sure to place database/mysql into your Abyss path. 3. Unzip and Install MySQL into the new database/mysql folder. 4. Create a new text file and copy the following and paste it into your new text file. [mysqld] basedir=X:/Program Files/Abyss Web Server/database/mysql/ datadir=X:/Program Files/Abyss Web Server/database/mysql/data/ if(window.hljsLoader && !document.currentScript.parentNode.hasAttribute('data-s9e-livepreview-onupdate')) { window.hljsLoader.highlightBlocks(document.currentScript.parentNode); } Please Note: Replace the values for basedir and datadir with the paths to your installation if on another partition or if in another directory... The file should probably now look like the following: [mysqld] basedir=C:/yourpathto/Abyss Web Server/database/mysql/ datadir=C:/yourpathto/Abyss Web Server/database/mysql/data/ if(window.hljsLoader && !document.currentScript.parentNode.hasAttribute('data-s9e-livepreview-onupdate')) { window.hljsLoader.highlightBlocks(document.currentScript.parentNode); } 5. Save the new text document as my.ini and save it in either your C:\WINDOWS or C:\WINNT directory. Re-cap So far MySQL is installed into the database/mysql folder and you saved a "my.ini" file into the WINDOWS/WINNT directory... Excellent! 6. Navigate your way into the database folder > mysql > bin and launch winmysqladmin.exe Final Step Upon launching that file you should now see a traffic signal in your system tray... Is the light green? Excellent you have MySQL ready to serve... TIP MySQL is a fabulous server but requires plenty of command line knowledge. Fortunately theirs a really nice GUI in php for it called phpMyAdmin. i dont have a winmysqladmin.exe , really.

yes i have the same problem as Server One Host i do not have a file named winmysqladmin.exe all i have is a file named mysqladmin.exe and when i run it i get a command screen that just flashes up and no imysql icon in taskbar and no process running any help plz

If your running on a Win9x version , I would recommend running MySQL in
the background , to do this go to C:\MySQL\bin and click mysqld_opt.exe.
Note: If this is a Windows NT type of Operating system , you should be able
to get away with just using the MySQL green light tray icon program. LateR!

im running winxp pro sp2 and like i said i dont have winmysqladmin.exe all i have is mysqladmin.exe and when i run it it only flashes a command screen then disapares thats all and i dont have mysql_opt.exe either

ok i was using version 4.1 of mysql so i went and downloaded version 4.0 and it works so im just going to use it

Hi all,
I've been working on installing MySQL for days now. Here's what I've got:
Sony VAIO PII 400MHz w/Win98 (old isn't always a bad thing)
256Mb RAM
Abyss running on dedicated 10Gb drive
PHP
The first thing I did was try v 4 of MySQL...nothing...couldn't even get the traffic light icon in the systray
Removed that version and downloaded and installed v 5 of MySQL...VOILA!!! Grenn light!
NOW, I can't even get a username/password dialog in order to administer the program so I can't even get past the 1st step to using MySQL.
Anyone have any suggestions???

ive installd MySql to C:\Program Files\Abyss Web Server\Database\mysql
created a MySql Database
Im using mysql-4.1.10a for Windows
when i run mysqladmin.exe
it just pops up and nothing happends, i didnt even catch what it said in comand prompt No green or red light

k i was able to run the dos exe files throught Command.com
i copyed it over from the C:\windows\system_32 to the folder i wanted it in
it runs the files, but nothing happens, just alot of spamming lol

Hi,
i got green light for a few seconds and then it lights red again.
First thought was that Windows Firewall has blocked MySQL port - so i allowed this port to be opened - still changes to red.
In WinMySQLadmin1.4->Environment->MyODBC is shown error "Not Found". Question is - what is not found? There is nothing else written except "Not Found". I searched for *.err file and got nothing.
My.ini file seems to be correct.
(I use WinXP, Abyss Web Server, MySQL 4.1, MyODBC.)
What should I do!?

i followed your tutorial to the letter no green light when i did the ini file it asked if i wanted to replace the file said yes could that be why any ideas to how i can rectify this problem

I'm running my server as a windows service. I don't even have a taskbar icon. How do I know if MySQL is running? I assume it's not, since I can't seem to run mysql.exe succesfully...

Gripp, welcome to the forums.
Open your Task Manager to see if mysqld-nt.exe is running.

I can't get to my task manager :-[... it's a used computer, so every time I try to open the task manager it tells me that an my computer administrator has disabled it... even though I am a system adimn and have the only user account.

ok i think i did everything right just when I run the config program and that last little part about the InnoDB or whatever and I tell it too go into database/mysql folder and hit next hit stops at the part where it is confirming the second thing what is wrong
i think it has something to do with the my.ini it is looking at the my.ini file not in where i put it IN WINDOWS but in the abyss web server folder

ive installed mysql and i can not find any file called mysqladmin i have even used the file search with windows there just isnt a file called mysqladmin any were on my computer

I think this is winmysqladmin you are looking for, it should be the one that looks like traffic lights.

The new packages of MySQL (the one which size is around 14MB) does not contain MySQLAdmin. The new installer of MySQL takes care of setting the new root password.
