If you get broadband, you will want 300kbps upload, but I recommend at least 512kbps if you're serious about hosting a website. I have on average 650kbps, and even with that, I want more.

My 400Kbps got so loaded up I moved all my sites to a dedicated server in san fransisco last week. I now have 100Mbps up/down :) It was the only option for me since my ISP wanted £10 more for just 112Kbps more upload and 6Mbps more download, which was pathetic.

i have to agree faster is better but i'm currently just a poor student so i just have to take what i get and i dont really what my site to get to big its really just somthing i'm doing out of personal interest and the bigger it is the more hackers i'll atrack and i dont really wanna have to mess around with security to much.

To avoid hacking just make sure you have a firewall and make sure any scripts you run are secure. If you made them yourself then check for anything that could be used to hack your system.
Most of all, BACKUP your data. My server backs up hourly to my server at home, which then makes incremental backups of the data so I can go back to any of 7 days worth of data at hourly intervals.
